What is MySpace?

MySpace is currently the largest social networking site on the Internet today. Although its popularity exploded in 2003, the site has actually been around since 1998. It was at that time that the domain name of myspace.com was registered to a company in San Francisco. The owners originally opened the site as a film and file sharing website. At that time, it was free for members to register and every member was given a certain amount of disk space. The amount of disk space that they were given would be increased according to how many people they referred to the site. The site was shut down in 2001 because the owners weren’t making enough profit from the site to make it worthwhile and because there wasn’t enough public interest.

Then in 2003, the site was purchased by Tom Anderson and MySpace became what it is today. MySpace has many advantages to those that use it for personal or business reasons. MySpace allows people to stay in touch with online friends or with friends that they know in the ‘real’ world. Once you have created a MySpace page, it allows others to view that page and see what your interests are, where you are located, and to promote themselves or their business.

MySpace has many different advantages. Because it is such a huge network, you can find just about anyone on MySpace, as long as they also have a MySpace profile. Besides searching for people that you already know, you can also look for people that you don’t know but that share the same interests as you. MySpace is a great place to keep in touch with those you know and to meet and chat with those you don’t. MySpace is also a huge multimedia site. There are many video and audio files that you can place on your page free of charge. Just as the music and videos that you add to your page will help to display your personality, you can also add just about anything else to your profile. Choose from avatars, icons, backgrounds, layouts, your own television shows and videos, your own music, and much more. MySpace is HTML and Java-based enabled so your choices are truly limitless!

One of the disadvantages to MySpace is that it can be fairly complicated to use. Although you can put anything on your page that you would like, you do need to have the code to be able to do so. MySpace is a place for options and allows anyone to do anything they would like to their page. Browsing through the different pages, one can see many different things that are unique and that they would like on their own page but MySpace does not tell you how to do these things. You will need to research it for yourself and find out how to create the same look on your own. Privacy can also become an issue on MySpace. Once you have created a profile, anyone that wants to look at it is able to. MySpace does offer some privacy in its settings but choosing this option won’t allow anyone to see your page, making the entire page somewhat useless.
